Nigerian Physiologists Advocate for AI Adoption in Healthcare

The Nigerian Physiologists have called for an integration of AI in healthcare, noting AI as a Catalyst for Healthcare Improvement.

The 42nd Annual Scientific Conference of the Physiological Society of Nigeria (PSN) was held from September 25–26, 2025, at the Old Great Hall, College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL), Idi-Araba which  brought together leading physiologists, healthcare professionals, researchers, and policymakers to deliberate on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare and to address pressing issues such as poor remuneration and the brain drain among Nigerian health workers.

The conference was anchored on the theme: “Artificial Intelligence in Physiology: Exploring the Intersection of Intelligence and Life.” delivered by Dr. Olusola Sayeed Ayoola, CEO of RAIN Robotics, who spoke on the integration of AI and Robotics in Human physiology. He also highlighted the benefits for Nigeria to localize AI innovations and adapt them to address unique health challenges. Noting that AI is a transformative tool in healthcare delivery and should not be seen as a competition.

He also emphasized the need for Nigerian healthcare professionals to embrace AI as a complementary tool rather than a threat for reduction of diagnostic errors and early detection of disease outbreaks.

Participants stressed the importance of being “educated consumers of AI,” ensuring responsible and ethical adoption that prioritizes patient welfare. Also, a need for Policy Support – Adoption of AI requires robust infrastructure, internet connectivity, data governance, and ethical frameworks(1,2).

Conclusion

The 42nd Annual Scientific Conference of the PSN highlighted a dual agenda: embracing technological innovation through AI and improving the welfare of Nigerian health workers. The discussions made it clear that the success of AI adoption depends not only on technological readiness but also on the human factor motivated, well-remunerated, and adequately trained health professionals.

The conference therefore stands as a call to action for government, academia, and stakeholders to invest in both digital transformation and human capital to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system.
