CJID Africa announces a virtual training on July 31, 2025, hosted by the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development, focusing on leveraging Google AI tools for media reporting. This initiative reflects the growing integration of AI in journalism, with a 2023 Reuters Institute study showing that 65% of journalists already use AI for research or transcription. Targeting West African journalists, the training aligns with CJID’s mission to empower African media through technology, building on their impactful work, such as the “Stolen Childhoods” project, which utilized innovative tools to expose child trafficking.
This move addresses a critical regional need, as a 2022 UNESCO report noted that 70% of African newsrooms lack digital training. The inclusion of Google’s Pinpoint tool, hinted at in the training, promises a significant boost in efficiency, drawing from its proven 90% transcription accuracy in Hindi ground reporting by Main Media, offering a potential leap forward for African journalists facing resource constraints.
